Advertising ban ! Will it work in India?

Posted by Rahul Narula on August 27, 2008

After reading a recent news item about Apple iPhone ad been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority in UK I wondered if this happened in India around 90% of the ads would have to be banned just for the same reason of “misleading consumers”.

I even wonder if India even has such an authority in place. I am sure it will surely be existing but wondering what its function would be except sleeping.

Phulki – A hindi music search engine

Posted by Rahul Narula on July 22, 2008

Do you have trouble finding the hindi music of your choice ? Phulki, a new hindi music search engine is there to help you in your pursuit. The interface is slick with search results page using the Yahoo YUI API’s to make use of the Ajax features. Some of the features that I like are

  • An in-built player to play the music directly from the search result
  • You can create you own personalized playlists of the searched songs (requires login)
  • Search possible on all attributes of a song including movie, year, singer, album etc
  • The home page list some of the popular searches, latest releases and featured playlist

A few features I would like to be added and I feel are missing currently are

  • The player should be allowed to be popped out in a new window else one may accidentally close the browser window or move away
  • A search result item should be allowed to be rated and then sorting should be provided
  • A search result should include number of times song has been played

All-in-all a very handy and a nice tool to use if you are a music buff.

Follow-On : A deprecated term in Indian cricket

Posted by Rahul Narula on August 12, 2007

Third(Oval) Test Ind Vs Eng, 9-13 Aug, 2007

After India managed to play upto their potential for the first 3 days of the test match and managed to gain a match winning lead of 319 runs there came a faltering decision by captain Rahul Dravid not to enforce follow-on. To my utter surprise I couldnt understand the decision of bat again in the overcast conditions where Indian bowlers could have done substantial damage to the English batting lineup. Indian batsmen are facing the same music as the result of overcast conditions with India tottering at 11/3 in just 6 overs.

Generally, the decision not to enforce follow-on are taken my captains when he feel his bowlers need rest to bowl at the batsmen again. Also in such a situation the captain doesn’t want to take a chance to bat last on the deteriorating wicket. It can be understood in certain situations but the condition in which Rahul Dravid took the decision to bat second and not enforcing follow-on is totally beyond my understanding. To me I can only feel that Rahul doesnt believe in follow-on. If he cant make use of it in such a situation as today I feel he had deprecated the term from Indian Cricket.

Get digital photo prints delivery in India

Posted by Rahul Narula on May 17, 2007

I read about Merasnap on some blog and created an account. Before I could collate pictures to try then, luck came my way when Merasnap gave me an option to refer a few friends in lieu of 10 free digital prints. It was the best opportunity to try the service and quality without losing anything. I went ahead and referred a few of my friends, especially who are abroad. Then I uploaded the photos and placed my free order. Wow voila !! within a couple of days I received a cool nicely packaged courier with my prints. I was impressed by their service quality and with prices very much reasonable I feel its worth giving a try. The only bottom side is they service only India currently. The service is based out of Bangalore.

So for people abroad looking to share their holidays or celebrations with relatives and friends in India services like these are a sure boon.
